Combining Aerobic and Resistance Training is Your Best Bet for Lowering Blood Sugar and Bad Cholesterol

Exercise does much more than burn calories or build muscle. The right type of training can change how your body handles blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Those changes matter because all three have a major influence on cardiovascular and metabolic health.

The interesting part is that different exercises produce different results. Cardio may excel in one area, while strength training performs better in another. Recent research suggests that combining aerobic and resistance training offers a particularly strong approach for lowering fasting blood sugar and LDL cholesterol, often called "bad" cholesterol.

Why Combining Aerobic and Resistance Training Works So Well?

Resistance training makes your muscles work against weight or force. Dumbbells, resistance bands, weight machines, and bodyweight exercises can all provide effective resistance.

Each style of exercise creates different changes inside the body. Cardio challenges the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, while resistance training strengthens muscle and improves its metabolic activity. Combining both gives the body two useful signals instead of relying on one training method to handle every health marker.

This combination appears especially useful for fasting blood glucose. Exercise helps working muscles pull glucose from the bloodstream and use it for energy. Regular training can also improve insulin sensitivity, which means the body needs less insulin to move glucose into cells efficiently.

There is also an anti-inflammatory effect happening behind the scenes. Exercise-related oxidative stress can activate PPARγ signaling in monocyte-macrophages. This pathway has been linked with improved insulin sensitivity and lower fasting plasma glucose, helping explain why exercise can produce changes that reach far beyond the muscles doing the work.

A single workout can improve insulin sensitivity and glucose control for a period after exercise. Some research indicates that stronger acute effects on glucose metabolism may require exercise at close to 70% of maximal capacity. That does not mean every workout needs to feel punishing, since regular activity still provides important long-term benefits.

The Cardio and Strength Combination Can Target LDL Cholesterol

Blood sugar is only half of the story. Combined aerobic and resistance training also stands out for improving LDL cholesterol. High LDL levels can contribute to fatty deposits inside arteries, which can raise the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other forms of cardiovascular disease.

Aerobic activity helps increase energy use and improves the way the body handles fats. Resistance training adds another metabolic challenge by increasing muscular demand and supporting lean tissue. When the two forms of training work together, they can provide broader benefits for lipid metabolism than either approach may deliver alone.

Still, one exercise prescription does not dominate every cholesterol marker. Low-volume high-intensity interval training, commonly called HIIT, has shown strong results for improving total cholesterol and triglycerides. Traditional Chinese exercises such as tai chi have also performed well for increasing HDL cholesterol, which is often called "good" cholesterol.

Regular exercise can have a substantial effect on triglycerides and HDL. Research has found that consistent activity can lower triglycerides by up to 40% and increase HDL cholesterol by roughly 5 to 8 mg/dL. Maintaining an elevated heart rate and exercising consistently appear to be important parts of those improvements.

Blood Pressure Benefits From the Right Kind of Movement Too

Regular training encourages lasting cardiovascular adaptations that can help blood vessels stay more relaxed when the body is at rest.

The heart also becomes more efficient with regular exercise. A stronger heart can pump blood with less effort, reducing the force placed on artery walls. These changes help explain why regular physical activity remains a core recommendation for preventing and managing hypertension.

Exercise does not need to reach extreme intensity before blood pressure responds. Acute reductions in blood pressure have been observed after activity requiring around 40% of maximal capacity. This relatively low threshold makes regular movement useful even for people who are not ready for demanding workouts.
